View all 19 comments. The only time she sounds positive about anything is when discussing an obscure religious book, The Way of the Pilgrim. The real story here is about the obsession of the oldest brother, Seymour who committed suicide some time before with two books about that essentially talk about reaching a godlike state by saying a simple prayer to Jesus. I could feel like Zooey with his reading material too. Spending that much time with Salinger’s characters can be a bit trying hence the universal hate of H Ugh I love Salinger. Well, in the end, maybe not.
There are seven Glass kids, all of whom were, at various points, panelists on a radio quiz show with the best name ever: Just before hanging up, he gives his sister a final, and successful, piece of advice. I love working on these Glass stories, I’ve been waiting for them most of my life, and I think I have fairly decent, monomaniacal plans to finish them with due care and all-available skill. You can feel divorced from the world and not trust that anyone else is Seymour’s Fat Lady. But also spirituality, after a horrific world war. Understanding in my head is not hard for me. The first section, with Franny and Lane in the restaurant, was decent.
Allow Salinger to charm you with his perfectly crafted sentences llot sage-like wisdom. It is through the youngest two Glass members that we understand the eldest two.

Franny’s bilious outpourings may be wildly out of proportion, but they are refreshingly premised on an intellectual wrangle rather than a romantic tangle, flimsy political intrigue or financial conundrum.
But it was Salinger’s story of the hyper-smart Glass children that first offered me a viable way to come to terms with my own gifts.
View all 7 comments. Zooey, in which Franny and her brother Zooey interact at home. I shied away from Salinger for a full month, still harboring grudges over vocabulary quizzes. I was really excited about reading this. JD Salinger is a wonderful writer and his characters are the written equivalent of crack. As his younger sister, Franny, suffers a spiritual and existential breakdown in The short story, Frannytakes place in an unnamed college town and tells the snd of an undergraduate who is becoming disenchanted with the selfishness and inauthenticity she perceives all around her.

I mean do you have to be a goddam bohemian type, or dead, for Chrissake, to be a real ad However, I find Salinger much harder to take than Lodge. I hated A Separate Peace. Zooey is a sometimes-working actor, determined to help his sister.
